PolicyLab: Refugee Health Care in the United States
The Minnesota Center of Excellence in Newcomer Health (MN COE) is dedicated to developing trainings and tools to support health care providers, public health professionals, and resettlement partners in their efforts to better serve immigrant and refugee families. We build on existing infrastructure and partners’ extensive experience to improve continuity of care and health outcomes for newcomers.
As part of this initiative, the MN COE provides online learning opportunities about emerging issues in the field and best practices for caring for newcomers. To submit requests for future webinars, please email refugeehealth@state.mn.us.
About Minnesota Center of Excellence in Newcomer Health webinars and trainings
To improve health care experiences and outcomes for newcomers, the MN COE works with health care providers and public health professionals to identify gaps in clinical and public health knowledge and develops, promotes, and delivers educational resources and trainings. The MN COE also promotes national communication and collaboration among health professionals who serve newcomers.
Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit(s) may be available to providers (physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners) who view a recorded webinar and fill out the evaluation survey. Some presentations/webinars can only offer CME credits for a limited time. CEU credits for webinars are offered indefinitely. Refer to CME/CEU Requests and the dropdowns below for more information.

2024 ECHO Colorado Newcomer Health Series
In partnership with ECHO Colorado, the Minnesota Center of Excellence will be hosting a monthly training on newcomer health. This series is designed to increase medical providers' knowledge of the resettlement and health issues of newcomers, including refugee, immigrant, and migrant (RIM) populations. It will review resettlement pathways, evidence-based screening recommendations, and more common diagnoses and treatment approaches for pediatric and adult populations.

Supporting Newcomer Health Workshop: Enhancing your skills with interpreters (PDF) was presented on April 2, 3, & 15, 2024, by UMN Department of Medicine, Division of Dental Public Health, and M Simulation.
Intended for health care professionals working with newcomers in clinical settings in dentistry, medicine, nursing, public health, social work and other professions.
This interactive two-hour online simulation-based workshop is designed to build capacity in the area of working with interpreters for interprofessional team members. Workshop objectives include:
- Supporting newcomers and improving their care by collaborating with trained interpreters
- Working as part of an interprofessional team
- Applying just-in-time training in an online, simulated clinical environment with standardized patients and trained interpreters

COMET Virtual Short Course for Clinicians and Interpreters
COMET (COMmunication Engagement Training): Health Communication in Other Languages was presented by Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Minnesota Center of Excellence in Newcomer Health, and HealthPartners at the 2024 North American Refugee Health Conference on Aug. 5, 2024.
This annual short course is comprised of interactive, interdisciplinary education using a mix of lectures, case studies, and small group work. The course is geared toward community health workers, social workers, clinicians, and interpreters.
