Public health department health equity assessment

Hennepin County

Hennepin County developed these surveys to assess its public health department's knowledge and practices related to equity.

  • Hennepin County Public Health Department health equity assessment [initial survey]
  • Hennepin County Public Health Department health equity assessment [follow-up survey]

In 2018-2019, Hennepin County Public Health Department adapted BARHII's Organizational self-assessment for addressing health inequities to assess its knowledge and practices on promoting health equity. The survey also gave staff an opportunity to reflect on their own experiences addressing health inequities in their work. Hennepin County used survey results to identify opportunities for improvement. The county followed the initial assessment with a shorter follow-up survey a year later.

When to use

You can use the staff survey to:

  • View an organization-wide picture of attitudes, practices, and competencies that indicate your department's capacity to address root causes of health inequities
  • Hear from all staff about what supports and hinders their ability to address health inequities, including staff that don't often have a voice in planning and organizational decision-making processes
  • Identify priority areas for developing staff capacity and improving organizational function to support health equity efforts

Things to consider

The initial survey takes most people 15-20 minutes to complete; the follow-up survey takes 5-10 minutes.
