Organizational self-assessment for addressing health inequities toolkit (PDF) provides data-gathering tools to help local health departments identify the skills and infrastructure they need to advance health equity.
This toolkit was developed by the Bay Area Regional Health Inequities Initiative (BARHII) and includes several resources to help local health departments do a comprehensive organizational assessment of their capacity. It includes:
- Staff survey
- Collaborating partner survey
- Section on facilitating staff focus groups for more in-depth discussion
- Protocol for interviewing senior management to delve deeper into organizational strengths and areas for improvement
- Worksheet to summarize demographic breakdowns of racial and ethnic groups in the community
When to use
This tool provides public health leaders with tools and guidelines that help identify the skills, organizational practices and infrastructure needed to address health equity. Use it when you want to get a baseline measure of staff capacity, skills and areas for improvement to support health equity in the agency. Use it to guide strategic planning or developing or implementing strategies to improve capacity. Use it to inventory the organizational and individual traits that support the ability to perform health equity work.
Things to consider
Surveys, focus groups and interviews are straightforward, but will take more time. Agencies can choose to use one or more of the tools.
Appendix V includes estimates for time and materials budget for implementation. The toolkit also Includes a short checklist to determine whether your organization is ready to take the self-assessment.
