STD Statistics - 2022

Summary

There were 32,072 STD cases reported in 2022 compared to 33,706 cases in 2021, a 5% decrease.

• Chlamydia remained the number one reported STD in the state with 22,079 cases reported, a 2% decrease compared to 22,578 in 2021.
  • The majority of cases (58%) occurred in teens and young adults’ ages 15 to 24.
  • One in three cases occurred in Greater Minnesota, with at least 2 cases reported in every county in MN.
• Gonorrhea remained the second most commonly reported STD in Minnesota with 8,161 cases reported in 2021 compared to 9,671 in 2021, a 15% decrease.
  • 38% of all gonorrhea cases occurred among 15 to 24 year-olds.
  • 76% of the cases occurred in the Twin Cities metropolitan and suburban areas.
• Syphilis cases increased 25% with 1,832 cases in 2022 compared to 1,457 in 2021.
  • New infections continued to be centered within the Twin Cities metropolitan area and among males, particularly among men who have sex with men.
  • However, the presence of syphilis among females and people who can become pregnant continues to be of concern.
  • Primary and secondary syphilis cases increased 19% with 676 cases in 2022 compared to 564 in 2021.
  • 20 cases of congenital syphilis in infants were reported in 2022. This is a 42% increase from 2021 when 14 congenital syphilis cases were reported.
