HIV/AIDS Statistics - 2024

In 2024, there were 311 newly diagnosed HIV infections reported to MDH, a 4% decrease from 2023 (324). While this is a decrease from the previous year, it also represents a 19% increase from 2022 (261) and an 11% increase from the average over the last decade (279). 

  • 74% of new HIV cases affect communities of color.
  • Although, there was a decrease in the number of total HIV diagnoses in the state, there were increases in the number of American Indian, Black African American, Black African-born, and Hispanic people diagnosed with HIV in Minnesota.   
  • Black, African-born people had the highest rate of HIV diagnoses in 2024, which was 21 times higher compared to White, non-Hispanic people - 37.2 per 100,000 compared to 1.8 per 100,000 respectively.  
  • In 2024, there was increase in the proportion of all HIV cases among males that were 35 to 39 years old - from 10% in 2023 to 17% in 2024.  
  • In 2024, 16% of all new diagnoses were Black African-born, compared to 10% of all new cases in 2023.  
  • The number of diagnosed people believed to be living with HIV/AIDS in Minnesota is 9,826.
