Roots of Health Inequity

Roots of Health Inequity is a structured online learning collaborative for public health practitioners, to help improve and apply their knowledge and skills related to health equity.
The National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO) developed this online learning collaborative to help public health practitioners address root causes of health inequities and to act more effectively on social injustices and health inequity. This is structured online course that includes a series of on-line videos, documents, slide shows and interactive presentations. There are five units in the course, and there are activities in each unit that involve group discussion and participation from team members. The units are:
- Where to start
- Framing the work
- Public health's historical role
- Root causes
- Principles of social justice
When to use
The authors suggest this series can be used in a variety of ways:
- As an in-depth study of systemic inequities
- When a group is ready to examine class structure, racism, gender inequity and social justice
- If you are ready to influence institutions and agencies in addressing health inequities
The authors suggest it may not be the right tool when introducing the concepts of health inequity to a group
Things to consider
Course material is designed for group participation. Even if you sign up alone, you will be asked to share and strategize with others in a larger group. There is no need to go through an entire unit in one sitting or in any order, but there are specific requirements to receive CEUs.
