Mandated Reporting for Abuse and Neglect
Health Services staff play a vital role in safeguarding the well-being of children and adolescents and responding effectively to instances of abuse and neglect, helping to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.
All school staff are defined as mandated reporters in Minnesota, meaning they are legally required to report any suspected cases of child abuse, vulnerable adult abuse (for students 18-21), or neglect to the appropriate authorities. It is essential that school staff, including health services providers, understand when and how to make a report. The Minnesota Department of Human Services(DHS) website has great resources to help understand the process. The mandated reporter brochure describes the role of the mandated reporter and what to expect during the process.
A list of county and tribal agencies to contact for reporting is provided for your use.
Cases of vulnerable adult abuse should be reported to the MAARC -Adult Abuse Reporting at 1-844-880-1574.
